Steps for Life is the primary fundraising event for Threads of Life, a national Canadian charity providing support programs and services to families affected by a workplace fatality, life-altering injury or occupational disease.  At Avonlea Homes, safety is a very large part of our company culture and the reason why we decide to take part each year. Thankfully we have not had anyone suffer from any serious injuries and with our safety awareness and strong program we hope to prevent any such events in our future.  With the support and generosity of our staff,  trades, clients, friends and family we were able to pledge over $3100.00 this year.  Our goal each year is to not only raise more money than the last, but to increase our participation in the walk. Thus far, we have been successful in reaching our goals and look forward to surpassing our numbers in next year’s event.

Born and raised in Lethbridge AB, Kyle has always had a niche for entrepreneurship and sales. He started working on his business degree shortly out of high school at the University of Lethbridge concentrating in economics. While attending university Kyle was also part of a summer sales program that involved recruiting in the winters and management/sales during the summer months. The job required lots of traveling as his first summer brought him to Portland and then places such as New York, Alaska, New Orleans, Omaha, California and many other places in the U.S and Canada.

In 2009 when Kyle returned from New York he bought his very first home from Avonlea. Since he was personally able to go through the buying experience, sitting on the opposite end of the table, he has a great understanding of the buying process and what’s most important to a new home buyer.

When he has time away from school and work, Kyle spends time at the gym, either in the weight room or at the Progressive Fighting Academy brushing up on his Muay Thai and MMA skills. Besides the indoor training his other hobbies are running, golf and tennis which he enjoys doing when the odd time arises that he can schedule it in.

As much fun as all the travelling was at times he preferred being at home with family and friends and that’s why the switch to stay local and join the Avonlea team was the perfect fit. Through Kyle’s extensive sales experience he hopes to build strong relationships with the clients he works with as well as provide them with a seamlessly informative buying experience.

Avonlea Master Builder, building creativity in local school

Students at La Vérendrye school where the first to participate to Avonlea’s home design project in Lethbridge creating plans, elevations and scaled models of their dream home!

Lethbridge, AB, May 30, 2011: Students from kindergarten to Grade 6 gave an outstanding creative performance in the completion of their design project. They had one month to develop their idea and put in on paper while some of the students took the project further by building a 3D model of their design.  Miss Sandrine Coronat, the principal of the school, believed in the project from the beginning and proudly supported her students to work on their design project in their art classes. The kids had to follow one important guide line in respect to Avonlea green building initiative; to use only recycled materials to build their scaled models. The results were amazing; some of the kids really took it to the next level and impressed the Master Builder with all their conceptual ideas, creativity and talent!

Charlene Golsteyn of the grade 7 class has been awarded with the Highest Achievement. Her prize is to have her 3D model of a room represented in Avonlea’s upcoming Riverstone Showhome.  One of the bedrooms in the house will be decorated by Avonlea’s Interior Designers to reflect Charlene’s unique design.

Avonlea has been building Built-Green homes since 2006. The majority of them have been in the Sunridge Development on the West Side of Lethbridge. In 2010 an entire development was spearheaded by Avonlea; it focused on housing efficiency by using the Energy Star program. This development is located in phase 1 of Blackwolf on the North Side of Lethbridge. The governing programs that we use are the Built-Green and Energy Star programs, although both programs are similar, each has a slightly different focus.

We build in all parts of Lethbridge… so where we may not use an official titled program, rest assured that there is a trickledown effect in our spec homes. In many cases only a few features have been altered and each still provides a rewarding living experience and great pride of ownership.

All homes follow some sort of building science. Building science is the technology that allows us to take advantage of today’s best building practices, in other words… it’s the way we put things together. By planning what types of materials and systems to use, Avonlea produces a living experiences that doesn’t hurt the pocket book, or our children’s planet.

Some of the environmental conscience choices Avonlea picks are high efficient hot water and heating systems, spray foam insulation, selected materials that have low off gassing that can affect our air quality, and energy efficient windows that keep the heated and cooled air inside, allowing you to save some of that hard earned money in your pocket. In effect all this technology makes for a building envelope that gives you peace of mind and quality of living.

Here at Avonlea we strive to build a home that has the necessary tools required to be a haven for the home owner; its day to day operations will minimize the impact on the environment and help protect our planet. We have to do our part for a healthier future.
